A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE
CITY CLERK AND THE CITY ATTORNEY TO DRAFT
BALLOT QUESTIONS CALLING FOR AN ADDITIONAL TWO
(2%) PERCENT RESORT TAX ON HOTEL AND MOTEL
ROOMS AND THE ISSUANCE OF REVENUE BONDS TO
EXPAND THE MIAMI BEACH CONVENTION CENTER.
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Convention Center shall be
expanded to accommodate a greater selection of conventions; and
WHEREAS, Representatives Kutun, Spaet, and Friedman, and
Senator Gordon have introduced a bill providing for an additional
two cent resort tax on hotel rooms, that would be applicable to
the City of Miami Beach upon approval of the electorate; and
WHEREAS, revenues generated from this increased resort
tax shall provide a means to obtain a major portion of the funds
needed to expand the Miami Beach Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, revenue bonds could be issued to finance the
remaining portion of the Convention Center expansion; and
WHEREAS , subject to the enactment of the bill calling
for a two (2%) percent increase in the resort tax, the City Clerk
and City Attorney shall draft the appropriate language that will
call for the electorate to determine the approval of an additional
two (2%) percent resort tax on hotel rooms, and the issuance of
revenue bonds for the purpose of expanding the Miami Beach
Convention Center ;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that upon enactment of the bill
increasing the resort tax on hotel rooms, the City Attorney and
City Clerk are hereby directed to prepare the appropriate
resolutions and ballot questions in order to seek the approval of
the electorate of an additional two (2%) percent resort tax on
hotel and motel rooms and the issuance of revenue bonds for an
expansion of the Miami Beach Convention Center . Further , City of
Miami Beach Commission commits itself to support.
