AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, REGULATING THE DISPLAY
OF THE WORDS "RESTRICTED", "GENTILES", "GENTILES
ONLY", OR OTHER DISCRIMINATORY PHRASES IN AND
ABOUT HOTELS, APARTMENT HOUSES OR OTHER ESTAB-
LISHMENTS WHICH CATER TO THE PUBLIC, AND FIXING
THE PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF THE PROVISIONS HERE-
OF.
WHEREAS, the words "restricted", "gentiles", "gentiles
only" , or other discriminatory words or phrases of like import when
displayed in and about hotels, apartment houses or other establish-
ments which cater to the public, connote ieligious discrimina4on;
and
WHEREAS, such practice violates the Federal Constitution
and the Constitution of the State of Florida, is alien to the American
way of life, tends to lessen the dignity and tranquility of Miami
Beach, and is therefore contrary to public policy;
NOW, THEREFORE, MAY IT BE ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1. It shall be unlawful to display the words "restricted" ,
"gentiles", "gentiles only", or other discriminatory words or phrases
of like import in or about any hotel or apartment house or other
establishment which caters to the public in the City of Miami Beach.
SECTION 2. Any person, firm or corporation, whether the owner,
lessee or manager, or anyone in charge of any hotel or
apartment house or other establishment which caters to the public in
the City of Miami Beach who shall violate this ordinance, or cause or
permit this ordinance to be violated, shall be punished by a fine of
not less than $25.00 or not more than $500.00, or be imprisoned for
not more than 90 days with or without hard labor, or both, in the
discretion of the Court.
SECTION 3. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict here-
with or inconsistent with the provisions of this ordi-
nance, are hereby repealed.
SECTION 4. This ordinance shall take effect 10 days from the adoption
thereof by the City Council of the City of Miami Beach.

LATING THE DISPLAY OF THE WORDS "RESTRICTED", "GENTILES", "GJNTILES
ONLY", OR OTHER DISCRIMINATORY PHRASES IN AND ABOUT HOTELS, APART-
MENT HOUSES OR OTHER ESTABLISHMENTS WHICH CATER TO THE PUBLIC,
AND FIXING THE PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF THE PROVISIONS HEREOF,
having been passed and adopted by the City Council of the City of
Miami Beach, Florida, has been posted by me in three conspicuous
places in the City of Miami Beach, Florida, one of which was at
the door of the City Hall in said City on the 8th day of May, A. D.
1947) and that said Ordinance remained posted for a period of at
least thirty days in accordance with the requirements of the City
Charter of the said City of Miami Beach.
