FOLLOW UP ON THE MIDDLE DISTRICT CRIME TRENDS
This Letter to the Commission is to provide you with an update on the status of the Middle
District Crime Trends.
On October 26, 2001, I provided you with an LTC that detailed the Police Department's
initiatives regarding the reduction of the number of residential burglaries occurring in the
Middle District of the City. These initiatives included:
· The Police Department immediately initiated an action plan to create a pre-active
task force in an effort to arrest the suspect(s). To this end, 54 persons were arrested
for various crimes in the Middle District area.
· An informational flyer was prepared and hand delivered to Middle Beach residents.
This flyer included the specifics of the burglaries, crime prevention tips, and
important police department telephone numbers to call for additional
information.
· This information was also placed on the local cable television channel for Miami
Beach residents.
· A state-of-the-art telephone system was utilized by the Police Department to contact
2,575 Middle Beach residents, providing them with the burglary infonnation and
crime prevention tips.
· A town meeting was held on November 1,2001 at 6:00 p.m., at the Nautilus Middle
School Auditorium. This meeting was attended by appreximately 25-30 citizens and
provided residents crime prevention tips and information regarding the ongoing
investigations.
In addition to the above, the Police Department worked with the ~c~e Compliance and
Building Departments. Together, the departments monitored construction sites that were in
the area as it was learned some of their employees had criminal records.
This drematic reduction was the result of fine work and cooperation of the Police and other
