Gonzalez " ~' City Manager U SUBJECT: WEEKLY UPDATE Date: February 1, 2002 FROM: The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of January 28, 2002, Florida Lottery - Representatives from the Administration worked throughout the weekend with representatives from the Florida Lottery to ensure the success of the live Lotto drawings held on Lincoln Road on Friday, January 25 and Saturday, 26, 2002, This was the first live drawing stop that the Lottery made in its new Visit Florida Scratch-off games campaign. The Florida Lottery estimates that the drawing on Saturday evening drew its second largest live drawing crowd ever. Mayor's Blue Ribbon Tourism Task Force - Met on January 28 to continue their discussion of tourism related issues, The items discussed at the meeting included progress reports by all the sub-committees which have been meeting regularly, The Task Force will continue meeting throughout the month of February with the final recommendations presented on March 4, 2002, Parks Blue Ribbon Task Force's Town Hall Meeting - The Task Force hosted its third and final town hall meeting at Biscayne Elementary in North Beach on January 31 to solicit input and recommendations from the community in order to continue developing a blueprint of ideas to improve the quality and services of the City's parks. The Task Force will now take all the ideas generated from these Town Hall meetings and incorporate the appropriate ones into the blueprint, which should be completed by early May 2002, Miami Beach Heart Safety Program - The Grants Management area secured and received a grant in the amount of $6,000 from the Medtronic Foundation to assist the City's Fire Department in support of their Heart Safety Community Program, .' ~t Commission Committee Meetings - The Community Affairs and the Neighborhoods Committees met this week to discuss items that were later discussed at the Commission Meeting, Minutes of the Community Affairs Committee were sent on January 30 and minutes from the Neighborhoods meeting will be sent early next week. Business Resolution Task Force - Met on January 29 and approved the acquisition of the Gazit Building; the reconfiguration of the second floor of City Hall; and received an update on the Mayor's Blue Ribbon Tourism Task Force, Nautilus Right-of-way Improvements Community Design Workshop - Was held on January 31 with about 50 participants from the community, This was the second workshop held and the group reached consensus on the proposed improvements and the City is preparing to proceed with the Basis of Design Report, 71st Street and Normandy Drive Public Meeting - Was held on January 31 with about 40 residents from Miami Beach and North Bay Village. This was the first of three community workshops whose purpose is to solicit recommendations and ideas about possible enhancements to 7151 Street and Normandy Drive. The general consensus of those present was that they would like to see both streets reduced from three to two lanes and converted into two-way streets instead of the current one-way configuration, Other possible enhancements included installing traffic calming devices to slow traffic down. 2002 Boat Show - Representatives from the Administration met this week to continue discussing logistical issues involving this year's Boat Show, An LTC will be sent early next week with details regarding preparations for the Boat Show, Federal Lobbyists - Met with representatives from the Administration and Mayor and Commission Members on January 31 and February 1 to discuss items to be included in this year's legislative agenda. The final legislative agenda will be presented to the Commission for your approval at the February 20 Commission Meeting.
