2002-24776 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 2002-24776 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE FLORIDA STATE LEGISLATURE TO PREVENT THE REDISTRICTING PROPOSAL AFFECTING MIAMI BEACH RESIDENTS WHICH IS CONTAINED IN HOUSE BILL 1987 FROM TAKING EFFECT AND TO RECONSIDER THE NEW DISTRICT LINES IN CONFERENCE. WHEREAS, on March 6, 2002, the Florida House of Representatives passed a reapportionment amendment contained in House Bill 1987 which was heard on the floor of the House on March 5, 2002, only one day before its passage; and WHEREAS, House Bill 1987 will effectively disenfranchise nearly 10,000 Miami Beach residents in Florida's House of Representatives by redistricting residents in mid-Beach, the Venetian Islands, the Sunset Islands, and on Palm, Hibiscus, and Star Islands into a Miami district that represents mostly Brownsville, Overtown, and the Model City areas; and WHEREAS, Miami Beach residents have needs and issues significantly different from those in urban Miami; and WHEREAS, if the redistricting becomes effective, the affected Miami Beach residents would virtually be left without representation in a district where ninety-two percent (92%) of the residents are part of communities with different interests and geography; and WHEREAS, for years, the City of Miami Beach has had excellent working relationships with its state representatives; and WHEREAS, our community's unique needs are listened to and addressed by our elected officials; and WHEREAS, House Bi111987 threatens to shatter our community's political cohesion and hush the political voice of thousands of our citizens. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Florida State Legislature is hereby urged to prevent the redistricting proposal affecting Miami Beach residents which is contained in House Bi111987 from taking effect and to reconsider the new district lines in conference.
