GOnZale~ -~ City Manager , . ~~ 0 WEEKLY UPDA T Date: March 29, 2002 TO: SUBJECT: The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of March 25, 2002. Major Events Planning Meetings - Representatives of the Administration met to finalize details for the Sports and Fitness Event taking place on South Beach from March 28-31, 2002 and to continue with our preparations for the Memorial Day holiday weekend from May 24-27, 2002. In addition, the Mayor and Manager met with Luther Campbell and representatives from the NAACP to discuss issues related to the Memorial Day weekend. A report on the City's plans for the holiday weekend will be presented at the April 10 Commission meeting. Neighborhood Leadership Academy - The Neighborhood Leadership Academy, the civic and public information program designed for residents of Miami Beach and provides them with the information and resources to become more knowledgeable members of our diverse community, held its third session on March 25, with the Neighborhood Services Department and its various Divisions making a presentation. The participant's surveys completed at the end of the session were extremely positive. Parking Commission Workshop - Was held on March 25 to discuss the City's parking meter rates, hours of enforcement, and maximum time limits. The latter issue, parking meter maximum time limits, was discussed at length in that their would be a benefit to extending existing two hour maximum time limits to potentially four hour maximum time limits in order to accommodate and be consistent with adjacent land uses. This issue will be on the April 10 Commission Meeting for referral to the May 6, 2002 Transportation and Parking Committee for their review, input, and recommendation for potential areas where maximum time limits could be expanded. .. ! Winter Music Conference - The Mayor and City Manager participated in a documentary that is being produced by a London-based production company about the Winter Music Conference that took place on Miami Beach from March 22-27, 2002. Issues discussed included the economic impact that the Conference has on the City and what the City has to offer all who come to visit. Miami Beach Police Department Retirees Wall of Honor Ceremony - Was held on March 26 to honor twenty-seven Miami Beach Police Officers who have retired or passed away but who served the City with loyalty and bravery. All twenty-seven names were added to the Retirees Wall of Honor located in the main entrance of the Police Headquarters. Bass Museum Board of Trustees Meeting - Was held on March 26 to discuss several issues relating to the Museum, including ongoing construction projects, and the Friends of the Bass, which the Trustees agreed to have a separate meeting to further discuss the budget for the Friends of the Bass. In addition, the Trustees approved the In the Spirit of Martin: The Living Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. exhibit which is scheduled to take place at the Museum between September 7 - November 10, 2002. This exhibit is the first major exhibition to use the visual arts to explore the inspiring life and enduring legacy of Dr. King and presents a diverse group of artists celebrating his life and responding to his vision of universal democracy and equality. Miami-Dade Community College - The City Manager met with Dr. Eduardo Padron, President of Miami-Dade Community College, to discuss issues of mutual concern and possible ways that the City and College can partner in the future on different initiatives.
