LTC 538-2017 Miami Beach to Participate in the #Choosekind InitiMIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC# 538-2017 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Philip Levine and Members of ie City Co mission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: November 7, 2017 SUBJECT: MIAMI BEACH TO PARTCIPATE I THE #CHOOSEKIND INITIATIVE The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to share that the City of Miami Beach is participating in the #ChooseKind City initiative — a campaign in partnership with City of Kindness, Lionsgate and Participant Media that invites people in cities across the country to participate in kind acts as part of World Kindness Day on November 13 and beyond. This initiative will culminate with a special screening of the film Wonder in Miami Beach on November 16. The theatrical debut of Wonder works hand in hand with Miami Beach's City of Kindness initiative, which engages local communities by encouraging residents, visitors and employees to practice kindness in every area of their life -- spreading kindness and positivity throughout the urban island. Based on The New York Times best-seller, Wonder is set for release on November 17 from Lionsgate, in association with Participant Media and Walden Media. The family film tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August "Auggie" Pullman — a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. The film stars Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as the parents of a young boy, portrayed by Jacob Tremblay. The City of Miami Beach joined City of Kindness, Lionsgate and Participant Media, in addition to the other U.S. cities involved, to deliver Auggie's message of kindness to local community members. We will kick off #ChooseKind observances with a movie ticket giveaway to Wonder's exclusive pre-screening on Thursday, November 16. For a chance to win tickets, follow the city's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and share an act of kindness, that you gave or received, by tagging the city and using #MBeKind. Five lucky winners will be selected at random. City employees can also enter to win free movie tickets to Wonder by sharing their acts of kindness toward fellow coworkers, residents and/or visitors by emailing them to communications@miamibeachfl.gov. Students in Miami Beach are not only spreading kindness, but feeling it as well. Cheerios is making an impact by donating cereal boxes and t -shirts to members of the Kindness Clubs at Miami Beach schools. Thanks to the generosity of Crest, at -risk families and youth enrolled in the All Stars, Success University and Parent/Child city programs will be encouraged to shoot a smile at a stranger after receiving free toothpaste. In addition to the great things happening through our partnership with this film, we are also partnering locally with KIND bars. On World Kindness Day, November 13, KIND bars will set up a booth next to the commission chambers and give out free KIND bars to employees. As part of their Eat One/Give One campaign, each bar given out will be a bundle of two bars with a message attached encouraging people to do the KIND thing and give the other away - reminding us to always do the KIND thing for your body, your taste buds, and your world. Miami Beach believes every day brings an opportunity to be kind in the workplace, schools, at home and more. That's why the city is encouraging random acts of kindness from employees, residents and visitors — hoping to create a trail of kindness that crosses paths with each and every person in our vibrant metropolis.
