AN ORDINANCE OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,
FLORIDA, AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 1605, THE
UNCLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES SALARY ORDINANCE,
ESTABLISHING THE CLASSIFICATION OF CLAIMS
COORDINATOR; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES IN
CONFLICT; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. '
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,
FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: That the following lines be added to Section 1A and 1B of Ordinance No. 1605:

PROPOSED AME %MENT TO UNCLASSIFIED SALARY ORDINANCE NO.1605
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION:
The Administration recommends that the Mayor and City Commission adopt the ordinance on
the second reading amending Unclassified Salary Ordinance No. 1605 to establish the
classification of Claims Coordinator.
BACKGROUND:
Currently, the City of Miami Beach contracts out for services for the investigation and
disposition of all liability claims made against the City which are paid through the self-
insurance fund at an annual cost of $194,000. The cost to provide these services will be
reduced by approximately $77,000 in the first year alone.
ANALYSIS:
The savings of $77,000 is realized after estimating for all salary and operating expenses
anticipated by both the position of Claims Coordinator and the Office Associate assigned to
provide administrative and secretarial support.
The availability of an in-house staff person will enable Risk Management and the City to better
investigate and handle claims made against the City since the person will be on-site on a full
time basis. Being self insured, it is vital that our claims are handled promptly by someone that
is more accountable to the City and not diverted by handling claims for other clients, which
is the norm when the services are contracted out to local adjusting companies.
CONCLUSION:
It is recommended that this amendment to Ordinance No. 1605 establishing the classification
of Claims Coordinator be adopted.
