RESOLUTION NO. 2491
WHEREAS , the Cities of Miami and Miami Beach ,
Florida , are at present seriously handicapped in their
growth and development because of the inadequate depth
of our harbor facilities , and ,
WHEREAS , the Port of Miami would be made a regu-
lar port of call by many foreign steamships which dai-
ly pass our shores if not prevented by our shallow
waters , and ,
WHEREAS , a vast amount of commerce , both American
and foreign , is at present being kept out of our harbor
because of this lack of deeper water , thereby depriving
our citizens of revenue , and the United States Govern-
ment from a substantial amount in customs revenue , and ,
WHEREAS , the development of air transportation
has already made this port the principal point of con-
tact with Latin-American and South-American countries ,
which is bound to result in the near future in a deve-
lopment and growth of the shipping industry between our
port and these countries ,
Now , THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUN..
CIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH , FLORIDA , That the
United States War Department be and it is hereby urged
to deepen , without widening , our present Government
Cut , ship channels and basin to a depth of thirty-five
feet insofar as funds can be made available , and ,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED , That should available
funds be insufficient for this entire project that the
thirty-five foot depth be carried through the Govern-
ment Cut and as far into Biscayne Bay as possible , in-
cluding the present privately dredged channel , which
is twenty-five feet deep , along the north shore of what
is known as "Terminal Island" (a commercial development
on which already has been expended in excess of
$2 ,500 ,000. 00) , and that the balance of the channel
across Biscayne Bay be deepened to thirty feet , thus
enabling both the City of Miami and the City of Miami
Beach to benefit by the resultant entry into our port
of vessels of deeper draft than can be accommodated at
present , and ,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED , That copies of this Reso-
lution be forwarded to the District Engineer , Jackson-
ville , Florida , the Chief of U. S. Engineers , Washington ,
D. C. , and to Mr. W. D. Hilsabeck , Harbor Commissioner ,
Miami , Florida.
