Resolution 2598 i • RESOLUTION NO. 2598 WHEREAS, a hearing has been granted to repre- sentatives from the area of Greater Miami by the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors, of the War Department, at Washington, D. C . , II at which representations concerning the needs of deeper water in the channel from the ocean to the Port of Miami are to be exploited and made known, and ii WHEREAS, the Port of Miami is vitally in need of a channel of a depth of at least thirty feet at this time, in order that tourist and cargo ships and ships of larger draft than are able to enter the port at this time may be enabled to enter the Port of Miami, and in order that the needs of the Mid-West and South may be served by the Port of Miami in exportation through said port of raw products to Central and South America; and in order , also, that shippers from said southern points may be enabled, by shorter haul than now exists to northern and eastern ports, to import and land their raw products and freight at a point more near- ly adjacent to metropolis centers of the South and Mid-West, and WHEREAS, large expenditures of money have been made in building Greater Miami into a metropolis city whose popula- tion would greatly be increased by the presence of deep water, and whose prosperity would be greatly enhanced, should a deeper channel be made from the ocean to the docks and Port of Greater Miami, and WHEREAS, the citizens of Miami Beach are a part of what is known as Greater Miami, and are unanimously eager that such a deep water channel be dredged and made to the ends as herein stated, NOW, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, that it is the earnest sentiment and request of the said Council and of the citizenry of Miami Beach that the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors, of the War Department at Washington, D. C. , take such steps and make such appropriations and expenditures as may be necessary, forthwith, to insure the dredging of the channel from the ocean to the Port of Greater Miami, so that a minimum depth of at least thirty feet of water may be available through which ships may pass to and from said port, And this resolution is hereby ordered read be- fore the meetings of the Council of the City of Miami Beach, and a copy thereof ordered to be forwarded at once to the Board of Engineers above mentioned.
