Resolution 2815 RESOLUTION NO. 2815 WHEREAS, contract is about to be let for the deepen— ing of the Miami Ship Channel and adjacent waters from ocean to Miami docks to a depth of not less than thirty feet, and WHEREAS, the importance of the Port of Miami, Florida, has grown very rapidly in the last few years due to the almost unprecedented growth of the area in and about the cities of Miami and Miami Beach and also due to its strategic location for the fostering of Pan American and South American trade, and WHEREAS, we have within the corporate limits of the City of Miami Beach an island of two hundred ten acres, conveniently located with reference to the Miami Ship Channel, already surrounded by deep water and partially developed as a Terminal Island and admirably suited for use as a Free Port, and WHEREAS, we have observed the vast possibilities of international trade if there could be established Free Trade Ports along the seaboards of the United States, and this very important subject having been heretofore dis— cussed before the United States Congress, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI REACH, FLORIDA, in regular meeting as- sembled, that we hereby heartily endorse the present ef- fort being made for the establishment of a Free Port in the Port of Miami and we most respectfully urge the early passage, by our National Congress, of such legislation as will authorize or make possible the creation or establish- ment of a Free Port or Foreign Trade Zone on Habor Terminal Island, within the limits of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, to be conducted by a local body, at their own ex— pense, under proper Federal regulations, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Duncan U. Fletcher and Park Trammel, Senators from Florida, and to the Honorable Mark J. Wilcox and W. J. Sears, Representatives from Florida, with the request that they use their every influence to bring about the passage of the desired legislation. PASSED AND ADOPTED this day April, A. D. , 1934.
