The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to provide information regarding a proposed
signage installation to be performed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) at
Alton Road and 5th Street.
Historically, all eastbound traffic on the MacArthur Causeway has used the flyover ramp to
access northbound Alton Road, with the exception of buses. Given their size and turning
radius, buses must use the Alton Road/5th Street intersection to turn left onto northbound Alton
Road. This left turn movement is prohibited for all vehicles, except buses; and a sign was in
place at the intersection until it was removed by FDOT as part of the Alton Road reconstruction
project in 2013. Once construction concluded, the sign was not re -installed by FDOT, which
created operational issues for Miami -Dade County Transit buses that use this intersection.
Based on these concerns, the City's Transportation Department submitted a request to FDOT
for reinstatement of the "No Left Turn Except Buses" sign.
On Friday, February 2, 2018, the City was notified by FDOT that it would be reinstalling the
missing sign sometime between February 5, 2018 and March 5, 2018. While the installation is
anticipated to require only a few hours of work, at this time, FDOT has not advised as to an
exact schedule and duration for the installation. The installation may require the closure of one
eastbound lane along 5U' Street. If a lane closure is required, it would occur during non -peak
hours.
The FDOT Public Information Officer has agreed to provide updates to the City of Miami Beach
Transportation Department as more information becomes available.
