A "Citizen's Fact Finding Committee" today was balked in,efforts to determine
whether the 1 charge that Councilman Her b Frink is or ever was a member of the Ku
Klux 'Klan is true or false. Appeals of religious, fraternal and civic leaders of the
community went unheaded as Candidate Meyer "Mike Faust" Golub refused to present
the documentary evidence which he claim s he possesses. Faust said he would present
the documents at a rally on Fri-
day night and said he' was acting
"under advice of counsel."
"These proofs belong to the
citizens of Miami Beach and
will be given only at a 'public
meeting in any one of the parks
of Mialui Beach. If I, can't get
a public� p4$ k# ,J .shall take a
vacant Ipt.aiid speak to the vot-
ers to show them the written
proof on Friday of this week,"
Faust said.
The "Fact Finding Committee"
met in the offices of The Florida
Sun at 9 a. m. and were joined
by Faust. Baron de Hirsch'Meyer,
as acting chairman, explained
that, as representative citizens,
the group was interested in de-
termining validity of 'charges
made by Faust against Frink at a
public rally last week.
"We -ere n re as backers of
Herbert Frink jeir any/other can-
didate,"+ Seger explained, "but in
the spirit of fair play, we are ask-
ing you submit your evidence in
order thatwemay investigate. its
validity in behalf of the voters."
In reply, Faust read a state-
ment to the 15 committee mem-
bers. He said:
"I notice by The Florida Sun
on Suday that a group of indi-
viduals are demanding that I
exhibit my proofs that H. A.
Frink is a member of the Ku
Klux Klan here at The Miami
Beach Sun office this morning.
"I am here to tell you that those
individuals w h o signed their
names to the advertisements are
not going to dictate to me when I
shall submit there proofs in the
office of The Florida Sun or any
other office." Faust then declared
that his "proof" would be pre-
sented at a rally on Friday. Time
and place was not announced.
Frank Lee reiterated to Faust
that the group felt a sense of duty

Faust again declined to submit
his evidence.
Attorney Alex Gordon, a non.'
voter who has been Invited to
attend as an impartial observer,
then told Faust:
"Your refusal to substantiate

Faust replied "I am acting un-
der counsel in this matter and
have been advised to put my proof
in a safe place until I am ready
to use 1t."

The Rev. J. Mitchell Taylor told
the citizen's committee: 'I think
that this spontaneous meeting of
religious, business and civic lead-
°rs, interested in stressing fair
play, is the best political sign
possible. It shows that the citi-
zens and voters are interested in
their' elections and in the men
who will represent them. It shows
that theywant proof, not rumors."

- Following the meeting, both
Rev. Taylor and Rabbi Lehrman
were asked if they had comment
on the meeting or on the charac-
ter of Prink or Faust. Both em-
phasized that their position would
not permit them to endorse ally
candidate over another. J_
"I have known.Frink for eight
years and have never seen evi-
dence of bigotry or unfair play in
his attitude to any group," Taylor
said. "I accept him as a very
worthy citizen of this community
and as a civic -minded Individual
who has the best interest of the
cornmulty at heart."
Taylor said he first met Faust
five years ago, but had no assocla.
tion with the candidate on which
he could base a comment. •
Lehrman said: "I have known
Frink since I came here aix years
ago. He was acting mayor at that
time and I know him as the most
amiable, liberal man I have ever
met.
"Herbert Frink Is the type of
individual I would like to have as
a member of my congregation if
he was of my faith," Lehrman
concluded. He added: "I have
never met Faust before today."
