1674-7 Herbert FrinkProbers CaIJ Faust's Hand On Accustion of Frink A citizens committee assigned to investigate charges brought by Mike Faust that Miami Beach City Councilman Herbert Frink was a former member---ai the Ku Klux Klan, today called Faust's hand. The committee—composed of Beach business and civic leaders —asked Faust, a candidate for council, t9 substantiate the charges. He failed to do so, the committee spid. The following is a statement issued by tile committee: "In the spirit of fair play, the folowing citizens met this morn- ing to hear any evidence op proof that Mike Faust might .have to submit to substantiate charges that he has made that a Miami Beach City Councilman has been, or is a member of the Ku Klux Klan. "Mr. Faust appeared before us, and read a prepared statement, wherein he refused to make any disclosure, or submit any proof at this time. But he stated that he would make a statement for publication in' the press and over the radio, and at a public rally on Friday." * * * "It was pointed out to Mr. Faust that any statement or evi- dence submitted by him on June 3 would not allow sufficient time for checking the accuracy, or the truth of the charges before the day of the election, June 7. "It was pointed out to him that the undersigned was not a partisan group, but had sought this meeting with him, out of a sense of duty to the community, and in keeping with the Amer - scan traditions of fair play, to all parties concerned." "Again we asked him to submit whatever proof he had, either to this g , or any he might choose,o44r ial personrso14,Jso, 4 hel evidence could be . prop rly checked, and submitted to the citizens of Miami Beach in suf- ficient time for full analysis and consideration before they go to the polls on June 7. "In further spirit of fairness toward Mr. Faust. we also offer- ed to. publish any evidence, ac- ceptable under the American legal system, in a full page adver- tisement at no cost to him, pro- vided that he submitted it to us today. "Again HE REFUSED. We feel that our efforts to bring about a fair airing of these charges was in the best Ameri- can tradition. Mr. Faust's refus- als to. substantiate his charges is indicative of the fact that the proof does not exist or that he is fearful of submitting this so- called evidence to the scrutiny of the searchlight of fair and impartial investigation. Members of the investigating committee were Baron de Hirsch Meyer, Edward Copeland, Ed Singer, Allan Abess, Ray Ster- ling, Leon Berg Milton Weiss, Rabbi Irving Lehrman, Henry Dave, G. H. Mitchell, Jules Gil- ette, Harry Cohen, Frank Lee, the Rev. Mitchell Taylor and Dave Littman. -- senger fatauLy. - 411116 Frink Files SIoncr t Against Rival. andidate ti \erbert A.
