GILLER HONORED FOR 50 -YEAR CAREER
More than 250 architects, preservationists, politicians, journalists and
admirers recently honored Norman Giller, 85, during a luncheon at the Eden Roc
Hotel, the concluding event of South Florida's tri -county Design and
Architecture 2001.
The career of Giller, American Institute of Architect Emeritus and
architect of the Carillon and Diplomat hotels and thousands of other buildings
in Greater Miami and around the world, has spanned 50 years.
Randall Robinson, a planner with the Miami Beach Community Development
Corporation, said he was pleased to see the pillars of Miami Beach's diverse
architectural and civic community come together to learn about and honor
mid -20th century architecture and to honor Giller's contributions. The CDC
hosts the mid -20th century architectural display Miami Modern Architecture - A
Photography Exhibition at The Seymour, home of the CDC, that includes Giller's
work.
Leonard Wien, chairman of the Urban Arts Committee, said the luncheon and
exhibition were successful in building support for preserving mid-century
modern architecture.
Architectural and preservation dignitaries who paid tribute to Giller
included Peter Slaton, editor of Grid; former Herald architecture critic Beth
Dunlop; Norman's son Ira Giller of Giller and Giller Architects; former Miami
Beach Mayor Neisen Kasdin; Municipal Art Society executive director Frank
Sanchis III and Wien.
