SUBJECT: Creation of Elder Meal Servic s at UNIDAD Senior Center
The purpose of this Letter To Commission is to update the Mayor and Commission on
the funding approved at the February 14, 2018 for the creation of a congregate meals
program for elder residents at the UNIDAD Senior Center.
As directed at the Commission meeting, staff has worked with Victor Diaz to draft the
funding agreement that enables UNIDAD to implement the program as quickly as
possible. We have finalized language for the agreement this morning and will be
executing shortly.
While the aspirational goal discussed at the Commission meeting was to commence the
program by the end of this month, the logistics of hiring personnel and securing vendors
makes this very challenging for UNIDAD. After review with Victor, we agree that March
15th would be a more realistic date to ensure the appropriate program launch while
providing time to advise the community as well.
Since the Commission meeting, UNIDAD has: solicited applications for needed staff,
contacted certified and approved food providers to obtain quotes for meals, and worked
with City staff to establish beneficiary criteria. Program beneficiaries will be residents
aged 62 or older meeting the Older Americans Act eligibility and will be served on a first-
come first-served basis.
We will continue to work with UNIDAD to ensure that the meals program is successfully
launched to serve our elder residents.
