The MacCarthur Causeway will be closed to all east bound traffic (from Miami) and will be partially closed to all but 10caVresident west bound traffic between 5:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on these dates. Gonzalez XW~ City Manager U' Filming of BAD BOYS II and impact to the MacCarthur Causeway From: About the Film: Bad Boys II is filming over 90 days locally with a crew of over 150 people throughout the summer. The film & production industry is a major business sector for Miami Beach, and this film's decision to shoot during our shoulder season is a huge boost to the local industry. The director, Michael Bay, counts the films Armageddon and Pearl Harbor among his most well known and Will Smith and Martin Lawrence assume the film's starring roles once again. The scene being filmed on the MacCarthur Causeway is a major focal piece of the movie and involves a complicated stunt/action scene. The Arts, Culture & Entertainment Office and the Miami Beach Police, Public Works, Media Relations, Parking and Fire departments have been working hand and hand with the film's producers to formulate a plan regarding this closure. The production team for Bad Boys II has brought together a body of municipal agencies to work together towards developing a manageable plan for filming on the MacCarthur. As the MacCarthur Causeway is a State Road, the Florida Department of Transportation (FOOT) has also been intricately involved, and the film has received the support of the Secretary of Transportation as well as Governor Bush. The production team has spoken with and received approval from the representative of the homeowners association for Star, Palm & Hibiscus Islands. The production is "buying ouf' the tolls on the Venetian to ease east/west traffic and is mailing individual notices to Venetian Causeway residents regarding the traffic impact expected during these dates. Residents of Star, Hibiscus and Palm Islands, in addition to businesses and travelers using Terminal Island, will be given special authorization to access their homes and businesses by accessing the Causeway at 5th Street & Alton Road. The Venetian, Julia Tuttle and JFK Causeways will be the routes necessary for traveling through to Miami, with special provisions in place to accommodate local MacCarthur Causeway traffic. Throughout South Beach, up to the entrance to the Julia Tuttle Causeway, there shall be a large contingent of Miami Beach Police Officers on the street assisting with the direction and rerouting of 1 traffic. Production will be notifying residents and publicizing this rerouting information through the following venues starting July 15th. Individual notices will be mailed to residents of Star, Palm, Hibiscus Islands; notices will be mailed to residents of the Venetian Causeway. Notices will be mailed to Fisher Island residents as well as Watson and Terminal Island businesses. Notices will be given to construction crews at Watson Island and construction crews throughout South Beach. Notices will be mailed to car rental companies, charter bus companies, Miami Beach hotels, and Taxi companies. Electronic Message Boards will be erected (three weeks prior to closure) with information about the upcoming rerouting. The production will also partner with local media (newspaper, TV & radio) to distribute information regarding the traffic rerouting. Notice will be posted on City Cable Channel as well as being listed in the City's Traffic Advisory. Hospitals and EMS units will be notified. Miami Dade Transit is also working closely with the production to ensure public transportation is able to meet the needs of riders in Miami Beach. Information about traffic impact will also be posted at the City's web page. All parties involved during the planning process have been apprised of the impact this closure will have, and every effort has been made to make the closure as easy and safe for all affected Miami Beach residents and visitors as possible. Lt. Bray, Sgt. Bornstein and Sgt. Gam are integral to the ongoing planning and development of traffic routing during the closure, and shall coordinate the officers and traffic flow during the film dates.
