SUBJECT:
The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the Administration focused on during the week of
July 1, 2002:
Department Budget Reviews - The City Manager and representatives from
Finance and the Office of Management and Budget continued to meet throughout
the week with staff from City Departments to finalize budget plans and allocations
for the 2002-2003 fiscal-year.
Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce - Representatives from the
Administration attended the Chamber of Commerce's Board of Governors
meeting on July 2. Among the issues discussed was a discussion on the status
of education in Miami Beach with a particular focus on Miami Beach Senior High
School. Representatives from the City Commission, Miami-Dade County Public
Schools, the Miami Beach Education Foundation and the Miami Beach Quality
and Education Committee, the Principal of Miami Beach Senior High School, and
the Mayor of Surfside attended the meeting. As a result of this discussion, a
resolution will be presented and discussed at the July 10 Commission meeting.
Bass Museum - Representatives from the Administration attended the Board of
Trustees meeting on July 3. In addition, a separate meeting was held to discuss
the financial aspects of the Museum. A future meeting was scheduled with the
Friends of the Bass to continue the discussion on finances.
Miami-Dade County - Representatives from the Administration met with Miami-
Dade County Manager Steve Shiver and City of Miami Manager Carlos Gimenez
to discuss the upcoming site visit of representatives from the Democratic
National Party (DNC) from July 15-17, 2002. This item has been placed on the
July 10 City Commission agenda for further discussion.

Miami-Dade Community College - Representatives from the Administration
met with representatives from Miami-Dade Community College to discuss the
College's expanded courses that will be offered at Miami Beach Senior High
School this Fall semester as well as to discuss plans for an informational and
enrollment Open House to be held at City Hall on July 30 for City staff interested
in enrolling at Miami-Dade for the Fall semester. This is part of our expanded
efforts to make higher education more easily available to City staff and residents
in Miami Beach.
Byron Carlyle Theater - Representatives from the Administration met with
Bernard Zyscovich and Barbara Friedson from the Gables Stage Company to
discuss the Gables Stage's interest in the Byron Carlyle Theater.
City Center Redevelopment Plan - Representatives from the Administration
met with County Manager Steve Shiver to discuss issues related to the City
Center Redevelopment Plan. An item has been placed for discussion on the
Miami-Dade County's Economic and Housing Committee and for further
discussion on the July 23 Miami-Dade County Commission agenda.
Fourth of July Celebration - All events associated with the July 4th Celebration
were very successful. An estimated crowd of 30,000 people gathered on the
Beach on 10th Street and Ocean Drive to enjoy the concert by the Florida
Philharmonic and the fireworks show. Several positive stories about the event
were broadcast on television newscasts and in several newspaper articles.
