OUTSTANDING SERVICE FROM OFFICER MICHAEL MULEY

The purpose of this LTC is to inform you of the recent, heroic actions of Detective Michael
Muley. During June and July of 2002, while off-duty, Detective Muleywas directly involved
with saving the lives of three individuals in two separate incidents.
The first occasion was on June 19, 2002, at a softball game between the Orange County
Sheriff's Office and the Miami Beach Police Department. Following the game, one of the
Orange County deputies was observed unconscious at the wheel of his vehicle. The
deputy seemed to be suffering from heat exhaustion and was going into respiratory
distress. With the assistance of Police Officer Trainee Mario Pena, also from the Miami
Beach Police Department, Detective Muley directed the placement of bags of ice around
the stricken deputy and began CPR. It was later determined that the deputy had, in fact,
suffered a cardiac arrest. Detective Muley's quick thinking and performance of CPR
undoubtedly saved his life.
The second event occurred on July 14, 2002 at 6:10 a.m. Detective Muley was walking his
dog and heard a car vehicle lose control and plunge into a canal. After dialing 911 on his
cell phone, Detective Muley ran to the scene and without hesitation dove into the dark,
murky water. Despite the zero visibility, Detective Muley was able to locate the vehicle on
the bottom of the canal. Detective Muley then felt his way to the passenger window and
was able to successfully bring two passengers to the surface. At this point, Davie Fire
Rescue arrived and a diver was able to locate the third passenger. Unfortunately the third
passenger died in the Emergency Room. However, without Detective Muley's immediate
action, there would have been three fatalities, instead two lives were saved.
In the two short years Detective Muley has been with the Miami Beach Police Department,
he has accomplished more than many of us do in a lifetime. He is to be commended for
his incredible dedication and professionalism. The City of Miami Beach is fortunate to
have individuals of such high caliber serving our community.
