Summer 2002 - Recreation Programs
Subject:
The Parks & Recreation Department has successfully completed the Summer 2002
program of general and specialized day camps. Over 2,300 children participated in the
various summer 2002 programs, an increase of over 500 children from the previous
summer, despite several of our major facilities being under construction. Attached are the
actual summer statistics from 2002 Summer Recreation Camps.
In addition to increased registration, the Parks and Recreation Department held additional
training for staff, including CPR certification and an array of motivational training. Campers
from every park experienced the new Flamingo Park Pool facility and all day campers
participated in American Red Cross water safety and certification programs. The
59th Annual Playground Revue, "Miami Beach Salutes America", was performed to a
standing-room-only crowd of campers and their families at the Jackie Gleason Theater of
the Performing Arts on July 25, 2002. Over 400 honor campers experienced a rustic
camping experience at Camp Owaissa Bauer, complete with nature hikes, campfires and
marshmallows! A field day was held at Flamingo Park for approximately 300 of our
youngest honor campers. Concurrently, the Recreation Division was victorious as we sent
two basketball teams to the Miami-Dade countywide "Miami Hoops for Youth" Toumament.
Traveling Baseball grew to new heights as the Miami Beach Recreation Team placed third
in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association Tournament, held in Gainesville_
With safety as our main concern, Summer 2002 was a huge success!
