LTC 238-2002 CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission No. .58-q 00 To: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez \..~'" City Manager THIRD SOUTHBOUND DRIVING LANE ON COLLINS AVENUE Date: October 22, 2002 The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that the City of Miami Beach, working with FDOT, is tPhlanning to create a third southbound driving lane on Collins Avenue between 44th and 55 streets. We have notified major area hotel and condominium general managers and have not received any negative feedback to date. Before we proceed it would be helpful to know if you have heard of any objections or know any person that would be concerned. We would like to give FDOT our approval to proceed with the restripping by Monday, October 28, 2002, and will do so barring objections. This initiative was pursued in an effort to alleviate and improve southbound traffic on Collins Avenue between 44th & 63rd Streets. The City and FDOT have been reviewing a proposal to convert the existing parking/loading lane on the west side of Collins into a third traffic lane. Segments of this area were used primarily as a taxi stand; however, most of it is regulated as "No Parking Anytime/Tow-Away Zone". The taxi stand has already been relocated to the east side of Collins Avenue, adjacent to properties it has been serving. Also, a byproduct of implementing the plan is the elimination of the hazardous maneuvers performed by taxicab drivers attempting to service your properties. The proposed plan has been reviewed by City staff as well as representatives from FDOT and presented to the City's Transportation and Parking Committee. The Committee has endorsed this recommendation and supports both the City and FDOT in moving forward with this project. JMG\ptw f:lcmgrlSallljorgegonlltc-O21thirdlane
