A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, MEMORIALIZING
THE UNITED STATES SENATE TO RATIFY THE
GENEVA GENOCIDE CONVENTION.
WHEREAS , in 1948, the United Nations , through the
efforts of the United States , passed what is known as the
Geneva Genocide Convention, which is now a Multi-National
Treaty, and
WHEREAS , said Geneva Genocide Convention defines
genocide as those acts which result in the destruction of a
group or in making life unbearable for a group, either physical-
ly, mentally or emotionally, and
WHEREAS , although to this day more than 120 nations
have ratified said Geneva Genocide Convention , however, the
United States has not yet done so, and
WHEREAS , under the terms of this Multi-National
Treaty, it is permissible for a nation to enact legislation
outlawing groups that are known to be anti-Semitic or fascist;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that said City
Council, for itself and for each and every resident and citizen
of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, hereby memorializes the
Senate of the United States of America to approve and ratify
said Multi-National Treaty known as the Geneva Genocide
Convention;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that a copy of this Resolution
shall be sent to The Honorable Gerald R. Ford, President of the
United States of America, and to The Honorable Nelson Rockefeller,
Vice President of the United States of America, as the presiding
officer of the United States Senate, as the respectful request
of the City Council of the City of Miami Beach, Florida, for the
prompt ratification of the Geneva Genocide Convention.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 16th day -' October, 1974 .
