A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA URGENTLY REQUESTING
DADE COUNTY TO IMMEDIATELY ENACT AN ORDINANCE
PROHIBITING THE USE OF NETS IN EXCESS OF SEVEN
(7) FEET IN LENGTH IN THE SALT WATERS OF DADE
COUNTY, FLORIDA, FOR THE PURPOSE OF TAKING OR
CATCHING FISH.
WHEREAS, commercial netboats have been appearing in the
salt waters of Dade County, Florida, and indiscriminately netting
large schools of fish; and
WHEREAS, such indiscriminate netting of fish by out of
area commercial netboats is endangering both the local commercial
and sport fishing industry and depriving recreation, food and income
to tens of thousands of residents and tourists in Dade County; and
WHEREAS, Broward County has protected their coastal waters
from the onslaught of out of area commercial netboats by prohibitng
the catching of fish in nets in excess of seven (7) feet in length in
the salt waters off the Broward County coast; and
WHEREAS, Dade County has the authority to enact
legislation to prohibit the use of such nets for the purpose of
catching fish in the salt waters of Dade County to protect its
coastal resources for its residents and tourists;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Commission of
the City of Miami Beach, Florida to urgently request Dade County to
enact an ordinance prohibiting the use of net or nets in excess of
seven (7) feet in length in the salt waters of Dade County, Florida,
for the purpose of taking or catching fish.
