A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER, CITY
ATTORNEY, AND THE CITY'S CHIEF OF POLICE TO MEET WITH AND
ENTER INTO NEGOTIATIONS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI -DADE COUNTY FOR THE PURPOSE OF
ENTERING INTO AN AGREEMENT TO AUTHORIZE THE PRESENCE OF
A MIAMI BEACH POLICE OFFICER IN EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL
THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, AND TO AUTHORIZE
MIAMI BEACH POLICE OFFICERS TO TAKE APPROPRIATE LAW
ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS WHILE ON PUBLIC SCHOOL PROPERTY,
CONSISTENT WITH THE TERMS OF SUCH AGREEMENT.
WHEREAS, providing a safe and secure learning environment for all public school students in
the City of Miami Beach (City) is a matter of the highest priority; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission are committed to taking all actions necessary to
enable Miami Beach police officers to be assigned to and stationed at each of the public schools in
the City, and for such officers to be authorized to take appropriate law enforcement actions while on
public school property; and
WHEREAS, the presence of Miami Beach police officers on the City public school campuses
will provide a heightened level of security and protection for our students, and will permit these
officers to integrate into the fabric of their assigned schools in a positive manner in order to help
identify and address improvements in school campus security; and
WHEREAS, in order to implement a program whereby Miami Beach police officers may be
assigned to each of the City's public schools and authorized to take appropriate law enforcement
actions relative to such assignments, an agreement must be entered into between the City of Miami
Beach and the School Board of Miami -Dade County; therefore, the City Manager, City Attorney, and
the City's Chief of Police should be authorized to meet with representatives of the School Board of
Miami -Dade County in order to negotiate such an agreement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby authorize
the City Manager, City Attorney, and the City's Chief of Police to meet with and enter into negotiations
with representatives of the School Board of Miami -Dade County for the purpose of entering into an
agreement to authorize the presence of a Miami Beach police officer in every public school throughout
the City of Miami Beach, and to authorize Miami Beach police officers to take appropriate law
enforcement actions while on public school property, consistent with the terms of such agreement.
