Morales, City Manag DATE: April 2, 2018 SUBJECT: Calendar of Earth Month Celebrations I am happy to announce that April is Earth Month and the city will be celebrating all month-long. Many of our city departments and community partners will be hosting events to educate our residents, visitors and staff regarding the beauty of our natural resources and the importance of protecting our environment. MAmBEACH RISING ABOVE CELEBRATE EARTH MONTHI www.mbrisingabove.com • Thursday, April 17 — Sustainable Procurement Procurement Training Room — 9AM to 10;30PM and 10:30AM to 12PM The Procurement and Environment & Sustainability Departments will be hosting two training sessions for city staff on environmentally preferred purchasing for office supplies. • Thursday, April 19 - Miami Beach Senior High Eco -fair Miami Beach Senior High — 10:30AM to 12:30PM The annual Miami Beach Senior High Eco -Fair is led by the schools' ecology club and serves as a platform for students to learn about environmental efforts and organizations throughout the county. Participation at this event will allow staff to share the community's environment and sustainability initiatives with a younger audience. • Thursday, April 19 - Restoring and Preserving Urban Tree Canopy for Water Management in Miami Beach Miami Beach Golf Club (2301 Alton Road) — 6PM to 8PM Earth Month Events April2, 2018 Page 2 of 3 In partnership with the Green Infrastructure Center, the Environment & Sustainability Department will host a public workshop to discuss the importance of trees in the urban landscape including steps that both the city and public can take to preserve the city's canopy. We encourage the community to come out and provide their feedback on their wants from our urban forest. • Friday, April 20 — Earth Day at Miami Beach Botanical Gardens Miami Beach Botanical Gardens (2000 Convention Center Drive) — 5:30PM to 8:30PM The Environment & Sustainability Department will join local environmental organizations at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden's Earth Day celebrations to provide information on the city's environmental efforts. • Friday, April 20 — Dune Restoration Lummus Park Beach — 9AM to 12PM Through the support of the Institute for Regional Conservation and Dune Specialist, Rob Barron, the city will be leading volunteers in a dune restoration event at the beach adjacent to Lummus Park. The dune restoration will involve the removal of non-native invasive vegetation and the planting of native species. Volunteers can receive Community Service hours for their participation. • Friday, April 20 — Playtime & After -School Earth Day Activity Various Locations — 9AM to 1PM In honor of Earth Day, the Parks and Recreation Department will lead a clean-up with after-school and play -time participants. The clean-up event will teach participants about the importance of not littering and maintain the areas around parks and park facilities. • Saturday, April 21 — Baynanza Volunteer Clean -Up Maurice Gibb Park (1700 Purdy Avenue) — 9AM to 12PM Miami -Dade County will be engaging thousands of community volunteers throughout the county in cleaning approximately 25 locations along Biscayne Bay's shorelines and islands, including9 Maurice Gibb Park and Flagler Memorial Island (Monument Island), as part of the 36t annual Baynanza. Volunteers can register by following the link: http://www.miamidade.gov/environment/bavnanza/volunteer form.asp • Sunday, April 22 — Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off & Paper Shredding 40 street and Chase Avenue — 8AM to 3PM The bi-annual household hazardous waste collection and paper shredding event will take place at the parking lot on 40 Street and Chase Avenue. During the event, residents and employees can drop off old chemicals, paints, and electronics for proper disposal, as well as old documents for secure paper shredding. This will help keep hazardous waste out of our landfills and our waterways. • Tuesday, April 24 — Sea Turtle Awareness Public Workshop Miami Beach Golf Club (2301 Alton Road) — 6PM to 7PM Sea turtle season officially begins on April 1 and will run until October 31. Staff will continue education and outreach efforts with residents, businesses, and visitors in order to promote awareness on the importance of not disturbing sea turtles and minimizing light that is visible from the beach. • Friday, April 27 — Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony & Proclamation Stillwater Park (8440 Hawthorne Ave) — 1 DAM to 11AM Miami Beach will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony and proclamation in Earth Month Events April 2, 2018 Page 3 of 3 Stillwater Park that will bring attention to the importance of the urban forest and will re- qualify the city to receive the Tree City USA designation. Miami Beach has held this designation for 13 years, which is a testament to the efforts of our community's hard work to protect our vital tree canopy. • Friday, April 27 & Monday, April 30 — Arbor Day Sampling Giveaway Various Locations and Times The Public Works, Greenspace Management Division will host its annual sapling giveaway. The division will visit students at Biscayne Elementary, South Pointe, Fienberg-Fisher, and North Beach Elementary for a fun, educational event on how to plant and care for their recently acquired saplings. Visits will be scheduled over the two dates provided and will be based on each school's availability. Exact times will be shared as we get closer to the dates. • Saturday, April 28 Community Tree Giveaway North Shore Youth Center (501 72nd Street) — 9AM to 12PM In continuation of the Arbor Day Celebrations, Greenspace Management, Parks and Recreation, and Environment and Sustainability will be hosting a tree giveaway event. The giveaway will include multiple fruit and flowering trees, as well as balcony plants for residents of multi -family homes. A flyer that includes the calendar of the Earth Month celebrations that are open to the public will be created and distributed. Please note that additional events are in the process of being developed. Once the events are confirmed, they will be added at www.mbrisingabove.com.
