Morales, City Manager DATE: April 10, 2018 SUBJECT: Mayor's Memorial Day Week nd Blue Ribbon Panel April Motions The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide you with the motions made during the April 5, 2018 meeting. On this date, the panel met with hoteliers to discuss ways to engage visitors during this high impact weekend. In their meeting members of the panel and our hotel community discussed the panel's mission and opportunities for collaboration. Garry Johnson, DJ He The Mayor's Memorial Day Weekend Blue Ribbon Panel, in its role as an advisory panel, urges the Mayor and Commission to support the following motions. Staff awaits further direction from the Mayor and City Commission at the April 11, 2018 Commission meeting. Motion 1: The Panel would like staff to continue discussions with hoteliers to develop programing and utilize one of the limited special event permits allotted by the Commission for Memorial Day Weekend. Motion made by Ruban Roberts Seconded by Rev. Gary Johnson Motion Passed 5-0 Motion 2: In order to show the inclusiveness of Miami Beach, the Panel supports the advertising and marketing of other African American events that take place throughout the city, such as the American Black Film Festival. Motion made by Wendy Kallergis Seconded by Ruban Roberts Motion Passed 5-0 Motion 3: The Panel supports staff's continuing efforts to provide meaningful cultural programming during the Memorial Day Weekend and has proposed additional elements to be presented at the City Commission Meeting on April 11, 2018 including: A Mayoral/Celebrity Basketball Tournament; A BBQ Cook -Off Event; and Artistic Programming in place of, or in addition to, the Concert being produced by the Air & Sea Show Event Producer.
