Morales, City Manager Tel: 305-673-7010 , Fax: 305-673-7782 NO. LTC # 213-2018 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of tre City Com ission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: April 23, 2018 SUBJECT: Sustainable and Resilient Procurement Policy Implementation Update I am excited to provide you with an update on the implementation of the City's Sustainable and Resilient Procurement Policy. In 2016, the Mayor and City Commission approved the Sustainable & Resilient Procurement Policy, sponsored by Commissioner John Aleman, that strives to maximize the City's goal to minimize the negative impacts of purchases on human health and the environment, while supporting a diverse, equitable, and vibrant community and economy. The City's Procurement Department and Environment & Sustainability Department have been working with two of the city's main office supply providers, Office Depot and Staples, to establish a green portal to assist each department in purchasing environmentally preferable office supplies. The City's e -Marketplace, an online resource for expediting purchases of small items while maximizing contract discounts and procurement card rebates, will offer users a `greener' option when searching for office supplies in Office Depot and Staples. For example, when searching for regular office paper, users will be able to find an environmentally preferred option with similar specifications. To promote sustainable and resilient purchasing practices, on April 17, 2018, the Procurement Department and Environment and Sustainability Department held a workshop to train departmental purchasing liaisons about the Green Procurement Program and to promote decision-making practices that foster the transition to environmentally preferred products. ee"' mea T Gere. roa _rveosiP.qrio.7)3-1-retC"°°:), Green Procurement Workshop Sustainable and Resilient Procurement Policy implementation update April 20, 2018 Page 2 of 2 The City's current green purchasing represents only 35% of its office supply purchases with Office Depot and about 47% of office supply purchases with Staples. While there is a long way to go in this arena, these workshops help to move the needle towards more sustainable and resilient purchasing practices. To continue this initiative, staff will be monitoring the program and will be providing additional training to departmental purchasing liaisons highlighting the benefits of selecting greener options.
