LTC 273-2002 CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission No. P- To: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Date: December 6. 2002 Jorge M. Gonzalez ~, ..A~/'~ City Manager ~r ~ ARTIST IN RESIDENCY - FELLOWSHIP TO ASSIST IN ARTISTIC CREATION On November 8, 2002, Ms. Mera Rubell presented to the Cultural Arts Council (CAC) the concept of bringing 1000 artists ("A Call to Artists") to Miami Beach during the summer months of July and August 2003. In response, the CAC staff developed a draft of a fellowship program. A summary of the program is provided below. Artist in Residency-Fellowship to Assist in Artistic Creation The Artist in Residency fellowship program will support and recognize new artistic creation taking place in Miami Beach. Artists from all over the world will be invited to create works of art specifically inspired by the unique culture and artistic beauty of the City of Miami Beach. All deliverables will be tagged "Culture Made in Miami Beach." The fellowship program will provide free living space for 200 artists, and a reduced rate of $50/night for the additional 800 artists, in Miami Beach hotels during the months of July and August. As part of this collaborative initiative, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) has offered to provide the 200 rooms at no cost. For the remaining 800, a Call to Artists will be developed and disseminated through existing trade publications. A special $50 a night rate would be developed through the assistance of the GMCVB. The CMB is proposing to provide the studio space for the two months from any existing unoccupied public and/or private office space. The Fellowship Program will add to the coordinated efforts to create a viable and strong festival season for the Summer 2003. Art inspired events such as this have been highlighted as desirable for the festival season. The GMCVB will assist in promoting this program through the media and as part of its festival season marketing efforts. At its December 6 meeting, the CAC unanimously voted to undertake the administration of the fellowship program and is puffing together a task force made up of CAC members and other community leaders to fully develop and administer the program.
