Resolution 5273 RESOLUTION NO. 5273
WHEREAS, there is a national emergency now existing in the
United States of America, and
WHEREAS, because of such emergency there are numerous of our
citizens now in military service, and
WHEREAS, such citizens now in military service are without
the proper environment and entertainment while on leave from their
encampment, and
WHEREAS, it is the duty of every loyal citizen of the United
States to assist in providing the necessary spiritual guidance,
healthful, wholesome, proper diversion and entertainment for those
enlisted in the service, and
WHEREAS, under the direction of President Roosevelt the United
Service Organization of National Defense, Inc. , a non-profit cor-
poration, was created bringing together six national agencies, the
Young Men' s Christian Association, the National Catholic L/ommunity
Service, the Salvation Army, the Young Women' s Christian Association,
the Jewish Welfare Board and the National Travelers Aid Association,
in a common program of service for our defenders, and
WHEREAS, the Honorable Spessard L. Holland, Governor of the
&tate of Florida and Honorary State Chairman of the said organiza-
tion has appointed Mr. Judson L. Owen, a citizen of Miami Beach,
Florida, as chairman for the said City, and
WHEREAS, it would be of great benefit to the local organization
and the chairman thereof in carrying out its program for Miami Beach
that a day be set aside and designated as "UNITED SERVICE ORGANIZA-
TION OF NATIONAL DEFENSE DAY" . Therefore, in consideration thereof,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA:
That the 6th day of June, 1941 be and the same is hereby desig-
nated, set aside and proclaimed as "UNITED SERVICE ORGANIZATION OF
NATIONAL DEFENSE DAY" .
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that it is the wish and request of this
Council that each and every loyal American citizen of the City of
Miami Beach give his or her untiring efforts and wholehearted support
in assisting the Chairman and his organization to carry out the aims
and purposes of the United Service Organization of National Defense,
Inc.
