1674-7 Louis (Red) Snedigar Herbert A. Frink, Mayor Councilman • William Burbridge Herbert A. Frink CITY OF MIAMI BEACH John H. Levi FL ORIDA Marcie Liberman Ralph Pole (seal) D. Lee Powell Louis F. Snedigar I was mayor in very interesting times - Boom 25 - Bust 26 - Panic Wall St. 29 - Blow 26 . As near as I can tell I have lived at the same address longer than any other citizen - 1912 Collins Ave. Was never defeated as Mayor. As Mayor I have an unusual record - Only man that has been mayor more than one time. Only mayor to succeed himself. Only mayor without opposition. • When I ran for mayor against the incumbant mayor, of course, I had to get a platform and show the public why I would be a better mayor so I advocated the following. (See Hannigan write-up) When I elected not to run, the Hannigan article says all promises were fulfilled. In addition to the promises that were made, he aided and abetted many other good accomplishments. Zoning the most important regulation in the City bears his signature. He sponsored many changes in the old Charter, and at his own expense went to Tallahassee to get Ben Willard (Willard was Dade' s only representative) to Charter gave many necessary changes if M. B. was to become a city; gave jurisdiction (for police purposes) many feet out in the ocean, and the right to regulate aeroplanes 1500 feet above the city. The City bond issues were of such poor rating that there were no competitive bids. Bond values were put on competitive basis and high value and low interest rates were made. He was the first lawyer ever issued a license in M.B. Many city improvements have been aided and abetted. He as mayor helped cut the ribbon at the opening of the Venetian Causeway and opening of the 63rd Street drawbridge. Played a part as mayor in things pertaining to the general interest of Greater Miami. Welcomed Lindburg at the first trip of Pan American. Welcomed Rickenbacker at the opening of Eastern. Helped promote for publicity of Lindburg. The streets you drive on, the fresh water you drink, the sewers that serve the City, the sidewalks you walk on, the parks (some used for recreation) were put in, the police cars and Fire Dept. growth. He welcomed the first president ever to stop at the Beach (Harding) . Page 2 : He welcomed and helped arrange the visit of Pres. Hoover. Entertained Vice-President Curtis Daws. Entertained political Democratic lame-ducks, Al. Smith & Gov. Cox. Welcomed hey-day comedians and entertainers, John Golden, Georgie White, Sophie Tucker, Harry Lauder, Carroll Lou Holtz, Harry Richmond. Played no favorites in religion - spoke in Community Church at memorial services for Harding, attended dedication of Catholic church with Father Barry, sat on platform with Liberman in raising money for Washington Synagogue He got the Harvey Seeds Post its home as a gift. Although not on or in city administration, worked with and advised the Commander of the local Beach post as to how to get the lot for the site where the club house is. Welcomed the first ship-line, the H. F. Alexander, to the Beach. Attended the first major ship-line here, The Clyde Line. Both of his two sons were born here. If Louis, Jr. was not the first son on the Beach, there could not be many before him. For advertising services, the private schools offered free tuition to his boys, but he would not deprive his sons of the privilege of public school and contact (with) all America. His sons were out- standing in athletics. Jim won Clearys All-Athletic - award twice. Jim was a charter member of the Satan' s Fraternity that had equal membership of all religions - that was its purpose. The Satans was exactly 50-50 composition Jew and Gentile. I have membership in the Zionists and was a member of the Gentile-Jewish organization. I was raised in the Presbyterian Church of Bartow. The Methodist Church had most of the pretty girls. I graduated from Stetson, a Baptist school. My religion is the Golden Rule and activity is an organization that is trying to explain alcoholism as a disease. I have an application in to take the Yale Univ. alcoholic course, and have lectured at luncheon clubs in southern cities. I am available. I have voted in the minority, in the majority, and voted alone. Each issue stood alone. I consider myself an agent for the people and try to give to the majority, always keeping the welfare of the City in view. Two sons, both veterans. I served the full three years with the Florida State Guard. I served under Commander Mills in the Coast Guard volunteer investigators. Was mayor when the FEC was double-tracked, and made the trip on Seaboard when the new line came in. I am the man who formed the corporation with Ben Shepard that held the Orange Bowl tract together. I brought 0. P. Smith to this town.
