Resolution 5497 T r RESOLUTION NO. 5497 A RESOLUTION STRESSING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY AND URGING THE DEEPEN- ING OF THE SECTION BETWEEN JACKSONVILLE AND MIAMI AS A MEASURE OF NATIONAL DEFENSE. WHEREAS, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway has been deepened to 12 feet to Jacksonville but the section from Jacksonville to Miami has a controlling depth of not over 8 feet , restricting the usefulness of the entire project for shipping war supplies, and WHEREAS, with the entire waterway deepened to 12 feet, this facility can be used to largely replace coastwise shipping by making possible efficient and economical waterborne transporta- tion, and WHEREAS, with this facility so improved the railroads to the ports of South Florida can be utilized for the safe shipping of vital war material over protected inland routes and such supplies can be transhipped over shorter sea routes to the net- work of island bases so the submarine hazard can be reduced to a minimum; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Miami Beach: 1. That the Federal Government is urged to expe- dite the deepening of the Intracoastal Water- way, Jacksonville to Miami , to a depth of 12 feet in order that the entire Atlantic Intra- coastal Waterway system shall have a controlling depth of 12 feet suitable for the transportation of vital war supplies. 2. That the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway system and the railroads can then ship these vital war supplies by safe inland routes to South Florida ports where they can be transhipped over shorter sea routes through a network of island bases, relieving many war craft and merchant ships for other necessary service. r 3. That the City Clerk is hereby authorized and instructed to forward certified copies of this Resolution to our Senators, our Congressmen, to the Atlantic Deeper Waterways Association, to the Harbors Congress, to the Secretary of War, to the Secretary of the Navy, to the Commandant of the Seventh Naval District.
