Morales, City Manager DATE: May 23, 2018 SUBJECT: National CNBC Short -Term Re al Story to Air Thursday, May 24 The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to announce a CNBC investigative illegal short-term rental story that is set to air on Thursday, May 24. The CNBC team was interested in highlighting Miami Beach for their national piece, citing our aggressive and effective laws to combat the negative impacts these commercial transient rentals bring to our neighborhoods. The producer stressed the real interest around the country of how these rental platforms are changing neighborhoods and skirting regulation. The Code Compliance and Communications departments teamed up to take the CNBC crew on two late- night tours throughout the City in early March to capture the investigative process of finding and addressing illegal short-term rentals. Over the course of these ride-alongs, five illegal rentals were discovered. The production crew was able to conduct several interviews with various unsuspecting guests, along with a phone conversation with a "host" of several properties. In addition, Code Compliance provided hours of body camera footage, case reports and extensive fact - checking.
