LTC 303-2018 Meridian Avenue Tree TrimmingMAMI EACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC # 303-2018 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members o"the City C FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: May 24, 2018 SUBJECT: Meridian Avenue Tree Trimmin mission The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide information on Greenspace Management's upcoming trimming of the Targe Calophyllum trees lining the Meridian Avenue corridor, from 2na Street north to 16th Street. This work is intended to promote the health and long-term viability of these iconic trees. The primary objective of this project is to remove all broken or dead limbs within the Calophyllum trees, and to alleviate any canopy/structure/utility conflicts that may exist. Damaged branches will be trimmed to a point where shoot growth is present or has been initiated. If a branch has no shoot growth, it will be trimmed back to live, healthy wood that has the potential to produce new shoots. This might leave some branch stubs in the crowns of the trees, but will provide a final opportunity for these branches to produce new shoots. Branches that are completely dead will be completely removed. The trimming of the Meridian Avenue Calophyllum trees is scheduled to start on Monday, June 4, 2018 and will continue for approximately three weeks, although inclement weather could extend the project's timetable beyond that. During this period it will be necessary to designate "No Parking" areas on the block(s) where tree trimming is taking place. It is expected that: Only one or two consecutive blocks of Meridian Avenue will be affected by tree trimming at any one time, The parking closures will be in effect from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM Monday -Friday, Individual blocks will be impacted by the parking closures for one to three days, depending on the time required to trim that block's trees. Parking closures are necessary to prevent damage to parked vehicles and to provide the trimming crew with access to the trees.
