And then there were two.
The Singapore Resort Hotel, 9601 Collins Ave. , will be demolished at the
end of this tourist season to make way for another shimmering condominium in
the Bal Harbour skyline.
The only hotels left in the village will be the Sheraton Bal Harbour
Resort and the Seaview Hotel.
The Singapore, built in 1958, will be torn down to make way for the
Majestic Tower at Bal Harbour, a 22-story condominium with 165 units.
"The city and everybody will be proud of it," said Jerry Oren, the
builder who is convinced his tower will be the most magnificent in South .
Florida. Oren is planning to finish his other building, The Palace, just a few
blocks north, before starting on the Majestic.
On a busy afternoon before Thanksgiving, Oren was already making changes
in the floor plans of the Majestic -- enlarging a
bathtub and a vanity in the guest bathroom at the expense of a little closet
space.
Details are very important, Oren said. "You don't want to open the living
room door and look at a toilet."
The amenities will include 10-foot ceilings, built-in electric hurricane
shutters, his and her bathrooms and closets, exercise rooms and ocean and city
views from every apartment. The building also will have a pool, tennis and
basketball courts and private elevators that open into apartment foyers.
The condos will sell for $300,000 and up. Oren wouldn't be any more
specific with the prices, but a sales office with a model should be open in
front of the Singapore in a few weeks.
The Singapore, which Oren has been running for about a year, will be torn
down in April or May. Oren expects construction of the Majestic to take about
1 1/2 years.
