Design The Raleigh was built and designed in 1940 by the
famed architect Lawrence Murray Dixon, one of the most
prolific and acclaimed architects of South Beach's
historic Art Deco District. Dixon applied an understated
elegance with Art Deco grandeur to the property, which
represented an architectural significance during the
formative years of Miami Beach. The Raleigh's
impressive interiors, landscaped lagoon pool-heralded
as a "jewel" of modernist design-and commanding
facade, bestowed the hotel a strong oceanfront identity.
Guest rooms are adorned with the fabrics and style of
the 1940's period, featuring period furnishings, terrazzo
floors and cedar wood closets.
Location The Raleigh is located in the heart of South Miami
Beach, on 18th Street and Collins Avenue, 30 minutes
from Miami International Airport. Situated on a corner,
the property has frontage both on Collins and the ocean,

The Raleigh is one of Miami Beach's most classic grand ocean front hotels.
Designed by Art Deco architect L. Murray Dixon, the hotel opened in 1940 with
one of the largest private gardens on the beach and a pool widely hailed as "the
most beautiful in Florida" (Life Magazine); "one of the ten most beautiful in the
world" (Travel & Leisure). Untouched and unattainable for decades, The Raleigh
was recently purchased by hotelier André Balazs and joins his family of unique
hotels and restaurants, including The Mercer in New York and the Chateau
Marmont in Hollywood.
One of the most successful and widely imitated hoteliers in the country, Mr.
Balazs is known for creating hotels singular in their atmosphere, authenticity and
attention to detail. "It's a rare hotel that combines a storied past with such --may I
say --fine bones," said Mr. Balazs, of the 120 rooms, suites and cabanas which
featured as a backdrop for numerous Esther Williams' films. Renovation of the
property has been extensive but sensitive and gradual, similar to the approach
used in the restoration and re-positioning of the legendary Chateau Marmont.
