PIONEER MIAMI BEACH HOTEL BUILDER JOSEPH M. ROSE, 83
Miami Beach Art Deco hotel builder Joseph M. Rose, a founder of Temple
Emanu-El and the Mount Sinai Medical Center, died Saturday at Mount Sinai at
age 83.
A Russian-born real estate developer from Baltimore, Mr. Rose moved to
Miami Beach in 1925, drawn by the city's then- booming tourist economy. He
built eleven Art Deco style apartment buildings and hotels, including the
Royal Palm Hotel in 1939, which he still owned and operated at the time of
his death.
He was responsible for such other Miami Beach Art Deco landmarks as the
President Hotel, the Caryl Apartments and the Rose Maisonette.
"He was a real pioneer builder. In his day, he was told by people he was
building too far north at 15th street when uptown was Fifth street," said his
son-in-law Dr. Harold Unger.
"In his day, the Royal Palm was the class hotel. It was the best hotel."
Mr. Rose was the patriarch of four prominent interrelated Miami Beach
families whose membership numbers 125 relatives and in-laws.
He was a founder of Temple Emanu-El and it third president. He also served
as chairman of the temple's building committee for the Irving Lehrman Day
School. He was a trustee of the United Jewish Appeal and a former chairman of
the Bonds for Israel drive as well as a founder of the Standard Club and a
founder and trustee of the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
He was also a member of the Westview Country Club, the Hibiscus Masonic
Lodge, the Democratic Club and the Civic League.
In addition to his business and civic activities, Mr. Rose wrote, painted
and sculpted. He was the author of a published children's book.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; son, Richard Rose; daughters, Mrs.
Caryl Unger and Mrs. Gerri Lou Silverman; six grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren.
Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El in Miami Beach.
Blasberg Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
