Resolution 6151 RESOLUTION NO. 6151
WHEREAS, application has been _rade by Alfred Destin Company
to the War Department through the United States Engineers Office,
Jacksonville, Florida , for a permit to dredge sand for commercial
purpoeee in Bear Cut, inner end, off the southwesterly shore of
Virginia Key, Dade County, Florida, and
' WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Miami Beach, Florida,
is of the opinion that said permit should not be granted and the
application should be denied upon the following grounds, to-wit:
(a) Previous to dredging operations for commercial
sand th the Bear Cut area, the underlying sand
was covered by a layer of sticky marl, promoting
a growth of a flat tyre blade of grass. This
condition indicated stability. Dredging of the
character requested will destroy the Bay Bottom
stability with the result that sand will be free
to move into Bear Cut Channel and cause shoaling.
The free movement of sand will also cause pro-
grese'ive erosion on the southerly and southeasterly
shore of Virginia Key and on the north point of
Key Biscayne.
(b) Dredging as proposed can net up new directional
currents and increase the erosion at the northerly
point of Key Biscayne.
( c) Dredging operations in themselves alongside an
existing channel can readily result in the forma-
tion of shoals in the channel as the result of the
agitation caused by the operation of the dredge.
(d) Dredging in areas near the Ocean will result in the
more rapid movement of sand from the ocean, thereby
increasing the erosion of the nearby shores and
beaches, and in this case those of Virginia Key
and Key Biscayne.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Miami Beach, Florida, that protest be and the same is hereby
made on behalf of said City against the granting of a permit to
Alfred Destin Company to dredge sand for commercial purposes in
Bear Cut.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this resolution
be forwarded by the City Clerk to the United States Engineers Office,
Jacksonville, Florida.
