A RESOLUTION DEDICATED TO THE
MEMORY OF HARRY M. HICE
WHEREAS, our Gracious Heavenly Father saw fit, on January 31st,
1947, to summarily call our late friend and colleague, Harry M. Hice,
and
WHEREAS, Harry has always been associated so closely with the
phenomenal growth and development of our fair city for nearly a quarter
century, having come to Miami Beach in the early twenties to engage in
the business of designing and building homes; and
WHEREAS, he was early identified with our city planning, being
chosen to fill an unexpired term on the City Council in April of 1923,
after which he was elected and served with distinction through six
successive periods, totaling in all eighteen years, during which he
spent much time and study developing an perfecting our zoning regu-
lations and building code, both of which are so largely responsible
for the orderly and practical manner in which our city is building; and
WHEREAS, after voluntarily retiring from this Body in June of
1941, he was appointed and served as City Tax Assessor, doing a
splendid piece of work in this office for a few months until he was
chosen by our City Manager as his first Assistant, and has since per-
formed the many and varied duties of this office with distinction,
continuously until the date of his passing; and
WHEREAS, during these same trying war and post-war years Mr. Hice
has also carried the oft' times burdensome duties of Director of Personnel
in such a manner as to command the unanimous respect and admiration of
all of our city employees; and
WHEREAS, that proportion of rest and relaxation to which he was
entitled has been largely denied Mr. Hice by reason of his conscientious
attention to his many public duties, together with his necessary personal,
religious, fraternal and civic obligations;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Miami Beach, Florida, that we do hereby acknowledge and proclaim that
in the passing of our good friend, Harry M. Hice, this city and this
community has lost a most worthy public servant, of sterling character,
whose place in our midst will be difficult to fill, and we shall long
remember the quiet, courteous and painstaking manner in which he met and
solved the myriads of city problems with which he was constantly con-
fronted; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we do herewith express to his beloved
wife and loved ones our deepest sympathy in this their hour of bereave-
ment and as a token of this expression the City Clerk is hereby instructed
to see that a suitably embossed copy of this resolution is presented to
the bereaved ones.
