Dear Joe,
I received the coastal survey map this morning and want to thank
you for all the assistance you have given me. In truth, I am an
amateur historian really feeling my way through the labyrinth
that others are familiar with. If some of my questions sound
rudimentary, please remember they are coming from a newspaperman
who's evolving into a historian but who really isn 't there yet.
Along with that training comes a need to be more patient than a
newspaperman normally is; hence my continuous desire to get
everything yesterday.
I spent what seemed to be a lifetime at the Dade Records
Department the other day seeking out deeds regarding my new
friends Lum, Osborn and Field. It was tough duty for a rookie. I
know you told me that field surveys and notes also are down here
but, Joe, having to fight your way through a mad pack of
litigious lawyers and their clerks at the records office is
tougher than trying to defend against Michael Jordan.
With that sad story in mind, I have therefore set the stage for
this query: The map you sent last week was of a coastal survey
rather than a field survey such as the one you sent for township
53/42. Is this because no field survey exists for township 54/42?
It would appear to this semi-pro that a coastal survey would be
less cognizant of landmarks where a field survey map would better
illustrate the terrain.
