1607-1675 33 Howard Kleinberg Fonds April 8, 1998 Arva, I am quite skeptical about the "interview" with Richard Carney that you sent via fax today, and for the following reasons: 1. The Commodore's Story. Munroe makes frequent reference to Carney, holds him as a close friend yet does not mention something as significant as Carney piloting a boat for Hearst during the Spanish-American War. In fact, Munroe talks about Carney and the war period (pages 262-264), including an anecdote about Carney, in Miami, during that period. 2. Miami Daily News, Dec. 24, 1933. A highly-romanticized story about Carney yet that, too, makes no mention of Carney piloting a Hearst ship during the war. 3. Miami Herald, Aug. 3, 1936. One of those "May We Present" pieces. This, too, makes no reference to Carney and a Hearst boat. 4. Miami Herald, June 22, 1941. Obituary about Carney. It's quite long and also devoid of the Vamoose. 5. Miami Daily News, June 22, 1941. Ditto the above. How come Carney's escapades for Hearst are such a secret, especially since all the stories cited above make reference to Carney's seamanship and the piloting of Mellon's yacht? Why not Hearst's also? It was far more adventurous, if true. The only reference we have is through this unpublished interview from a date I cannot discern in your fax. It needs more research before being accepted; I wouldn't use it based on just that interview. Howard : 'l:ar3 .larr.ey, : •; . _ z lug (4 Y, ',', f Zwy, e r i* ;3,?r1(.
