SUBJECT: Miami-Dade County Emergency Beach Renourishment Project
The purpose of this LTC is to provide an update to the Mayor and City Commission on
Miami-Dade County's emergency truck haul beach renourishment project which will add
sand from 66th Street to 68" Street.
Natural erosion that occurs along the beach in this area was accelerated by storm surge
from Hurricane Irma and the winter storms this past year. After the storms, Miami-Dade
County conducted a survey countywide and identified this segment of beach as the most
highly eroded section and a priority for renourishment.Through sand placement,the project
will restore storm protection and recreational benefits not only to the immediate placement
area, but also to the beaches down current.
Construction will begin on July 9, 2018 and is anticipated to be completed by October 12,
2018. The project is estimated to place approximately 25,000 cubic yards of sand from the
Ortona quarry in Central Florida, with a total not-to-exceed budget of $1.5 million. The
contractor will be working Monday through Friday from 7 A.M. to 6 P.M., starting upon
completion of the morning sea turtle nesting survey.
During construction,the contractor will access the beach from 73rd Street and work south to
north. The beach access points adjacent to construction zone at 66'h Street to 68'h Street will
be closed during contraction.The City will continue to work closely with Miami-Dade County
to inform impacted parties and ensure that accurate information regarding the project is
available.
