The theme of this year's festival is "Art Deco at Play: The Golden Age of Sport." Your participation as a lecturer will enhance the festival's educational content and will complement the schedule of films and period footage being shown. This year's Art Deco Weekend street festival will take place Friday, January 15 to Monday, January 18, Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. The lectures will take place at the Ocean Front Auditorium, 1001 Ocean Drive. Art Deco Weekend began in 1977 as a way of promoting the then-derelict Architectural Historic District (popularly known as the Art Deco District), now one of the world's most vibrant and talked-about destinations. Last year the festival's free lecture and film series played to audiences of up to 100 persons, while more than 400,000 attended the four-day fair on ten blocks of Ocean Drive— with over 200 vendors selling antiques, collectibles, vintage clothing and accessories, food, and arts and crafts, as well as continuous live entertainment on two outdoor stages. (Selected press clippings from last year are included.) Proceeds from Art Deco Weekend enable Miami Design Preservation League to fulfill its mission of providing the community with ongoing preservation and education programs. Festival hours are: Friday January 15, 1999 12:00 noon - 11:00 p.m. \ Saturday January 16, 1999 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. \ Sunday January 17, 1999 10:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m. _' J Monday January 18, 1999 10:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m. The educational series, including lectures, films and videos take place each evening during the week leading up to the Weekend with several of each scheduled on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. For a more concrete example of how this works, please consult the schedules in last year's program which we have enclosed to give you a better idea as to the scope of Art Deco Weekend. Your lecture has been scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999.
