LTC 379-2018 UPDATE Miami_Dade County Emergency Beach Renourishment Project m MIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC # LETTER TO COMMISSION 379-2018 I TO: Mayor Dan Gelber and Members of he CityCo' ission FROM: Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager DATE: July 6, 2018 SUBJECT: UPDATE: Miami-Dade County Em gency Beach Renourishment Project The purpose of this LTC is to provide an update to the Mayor and City Commission on Miami-Dade County's emergency truck haul beach renourishment project slated to bring sand to 66th Street to 68th Street. The County will be expanding the project further south to address areas of erosion from 63fd Street to 66th Street. The beach is a dynamic system that naturally accretes and erodes over time. After reevaluation of the proposed fill location, the County has determined the original project area has accreted sand and there are areas south of 66th Street that are still critically eroded. Miami-Dade County is currently exploring the possibility of expanding the renourishment to include the area from 63rd to 66th Street. As the project progresses, the County will make decisions based on erosional conditions to ensure the most cost effective use of the contracted resources and funding. Construction will begin on July 9, 2018 and is anticipated to be completed by November 6 2018. The contractor will be operating from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm from Monday through Friday. During construction, the contractor will access the beach from 73rd Street and work north to south. The beach access points adjacent to construction zone at 66th Street to 68th Street will be closed during contraction. As the critically eroded sections of beach south of 66th Street are impacted as part of the expanded construction area, there will be limited beach access in the construction zone. The City will continue to work closely with Miami-Dade County to inform impacted parties and ensure that accurate information regarding the project is available. Please feel free to contact Elizabeth Wheaton or Margarita Wells if you have any questions.
