LTC 54-2003 CITY OF MIAMI BEACH Office of the City Manager Letter to Commission No. To: From: Subject: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez ~.~-~""'~ City Manager RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT ON MIAMI BEACH Date: February 26, 2003 The purpose of this L.T.C. is to advise you that on behalf of the Administration, I am pleased to join Mayor Dermer and various members of the City Commission to actively support a very important community driven effort, the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life," taking place for the first time this year in the City of Miami Beach. This event is to be held over a 24 hour period of time from May 3 - 4, 2003 at Miami Beach Senior High School. Funds raised from this event will go directly to cancer research, clinical trials, legislative advocacy and education. This event is another employee lead initiative with various staff members volunteering their time to lead the City's involvement with this event. City employee Ronnie Singer, herself a cancer survivor, has agreed to spearhead the City's participation in this family oriented fundraising event which celebrates survivors and honors those no longer with us. Since this is the first year this national event is being held on Miami Beach, we need to help ensure its success. To do so, I believe that we need involvement at every employee level. With current statistics revealing that 1 in 3 people will have some form of cancer in their lifetime, the time to find a cure is now, and that takes funding. Raising money should not be difficult since regrettably, we have all been made acutely aware of cancer's grip as we ourselves, our co-workers, our families and friends are stricken and battle this disease. At the February 21 Management Team meeting a discussion was held about this event. It is my sincere hope that Miami Beach's "Relay for Life" event will have the full support of all City Departments, Divisions, as well as that of all our elected officials. I am hopeful that this City will enter a significant number of "teams" that will get creative, have fun and at the same time raise money and awareness for this event. To start things off, I am pleased to advise you that the City Manager's Office has committed to creating its own Relay team. I invite each of you to become actively involved as well. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please feel free to contact me or Ronnie Singer at extension 6354. JMGIRIIRSIptw F:~cmgr~$ALL~Ltc-02~Relay for Life Event.doc
