` In the two decades after World War II the United States experienced the greatest
I j( economic boom in the history of mankind. Never before had so many had so
much to spend. The sky was the limit and the moon was the goal. When thus
industrial powerhouse needed a vacation it turned to Miami Beach and, always
/ bl,y -- eager to pease, the Million Ddlar Sandbar became the greatest resort of the

P 20th Century.

a} ! What had started as a national phenomenon in the 20's and 30's throw h the
.*;, - efforts of Carl Fisher and tme Deco builders south of lincdn Road, was
t transformed by Post-War wealth into an international success that rippled
northward through North Beach, Surfside, Bay Harbor Islands, Bal Harbour and
Sunny Isles.
This was the era of Arthur Godfrey, Jackie Gleason, Fronk Sinatra and the Rat
Pack, Ed Sullivan and the Beatles. The style was definitely not Deco, but it was
very Miami Beach. Moderne became Modern and too much was never enough.
L The future had arrived, and like Tropical Art Deco, it was dressed for winter in
Miami. It could only be called Miami Modern, or MTMo for short.

From two-story garden apartments to grand resat hovels and nearly every type of building in-between, the work of Miomi Beach Master Architect Norman
Giller exemplifies the full range of Mid-Century Architecture found in the Beach Communities from South Beach to Sunny Isles. Giller apprenticed under
renowned Tropical Deco architects Henry Hohauser and Albert Anis and then went on to put his personal stomp on the lock of Miami Beach, bringing Miami
Modern to one of its high prints with his 1957 Carillon Hotel.
