Resolution 2018-30418RESOLUTION 2018-30418 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO COLLECT AND TRACK, ON AN ANNUAL BASIS, SEA LEVEL RISE DATA FROM THE VIRGINIA KEY TIDAL GUAGE AND FROM THE SOUTHEAST FLORIDA REGIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE COMPACT (OR FROM AN ALTERNATIVE PREFERRED DATA SOURCE, IF ONE BECOMES AVAILABLE), AND TO ANNUALLY REPORT SUCH DATA TO THE CITY COMMISSION IN ORDER TO FACILITATE AN INCREMENTAL ADAPTATION STRATEGY IN THE CITY. WHEREAS, sea level rise is a matter of global concern with significant variations in impact on both regional and local levels; and WHEREAS, in order to accurately analyze the impacts of sea level rise, data gathered over a long term horizon should be used to track trends and realities, and short -term anomalies in environmental conditions and weather should be viewed in their proper perspective; and WHEREAS, to facilitate the accurate tracking of sea level rise in the City, and the development of best strategies for the City's incremental adaptation thereto, the City Administration should collect data from the Virginia Key tidal gauge and obtain projections from the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact (or from an alternative preferred data source, if one becomes available) on an annual basis and annually report such data and projections to the City Commission; and WHEREAS, the data collected and reported to the City Commission by the City Administration should be in both the U.S. Customary System of measurement and the metric system, the projection data should highlight the cumulative anticipated sea level rise from the current year level, and the City Administration should include any other related, relevant data that may inform policy- making. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby direct the City Administration to collect and track, on an annual basis, sea level rise data from the Virginia Key tidal gauge and from the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact (or from an alternative preferred data source, if one becomes available), and to annually report such data to the City Commission in order to facilitate an incremental adaptation strategy in the City.
