RESOLUTION NC. 8310
WHEREAS, a Bill has been proposed calling for the consolidation of portions
of Dade County into a governmental unit to be known as the City and County of
Miami; and
WHEREAS, the proposed consolidation measure, if effected, will have a serious
impact on the economy of all of Dade County, and particularly of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the proposed consolidation measure would clothe the County Commis-
sioners with dictatorial power which in the hands of future incompetent or irres-
ponsible Commissioners could be the instrument for incalculable mischief; and
' WHEREAS, the proposed measure, if enacted, could place in jeopardy the
economic welfare of 600,000 people, with property investments worth more than two
billion dollars; and
WHEREAS, it is proposed by three of our Legislators that this consolidation
measure become effective without giving our citizens an opportunity to express
their approval or disapproval at an election; and
WHEREAS, this proposed measure, if enacted, will be wholly inimical to the best
interests of the citizens of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the proposal of three of our Legislators, if it becomes effective
contrary to the wishes of the people, will be arbitrary, palpably immoral, will
do violence to the fundamental principles of democracy, and so far as Dade County
is concerned will destroy the last vestige of individual rights;
NOW, THEREFORE, EE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of M=iami Beach,
Florida, that the three members of the Legislature who are sponsoring consolida-
tion be respectfully, but most urgently, reouested to abandon this monstrous
measure, unless it carry with it a provision that it shall not become effective
until. it `shall have been approved at an election in which all of the qualified
voters of Dade County are permitted to participate.
