SUBJECT: TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF MAURICE GIBB MEMORIAL PARK CONCRETE
DOCKS "PURDY BOAT RAMPS"
The purpose of this LTC is to notify the Mayor and City Commission of temporary closures
starting August 22,2018 of the three concrete boat docks located at Maurice Gibb Memorial
Park (formerly Island View Park), at the intersection of Dade Boulevard and Purdy Avenue.
These closures are recommended by Property Management due to the severity of the concrete
spalling and the life safety threat it poses to the public.
On Wednesday, August 22, 2018 BCC Engineering completed a preliminary site visit in order to
evaluate the conditions of the docks and prepare a proposal for the structural work anticipated.
BCC has relayed to the City that the docks show significant signs of distress. The steel
reinforcement is severely corroded (see Attachment B) and beginning to de-bond from the
concrete. Based on the field observations of the deterioration, it is their recommendation to
close the marine patrol dock and the last bay of the public docks until appropriate repairs can be
made (see Attachment A).
City staff is addressing permitting, procurement and repair criteria for the immediate work. The
cost proposals requested incorporate the full scope of work to remediate and repair the docks in
the most expeditious method. Budget has been made aware of this situation and they are
currently working on allocating the estimated funds for the plans, permits and repairs. The
temporary closure will be in place until all of the remedial work is completed and the docks are
deemed safe again.
