Resolution 2014-28585 RESOLUTION NO. LO 1 4 ' 2 8 5 8 5 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISISON OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO REINSTATE THE ORIGINAL HOURS OF OPERATION OF THE ROUTE A BUS. SERVICE, FROM 7:00 AM TO MIDNIGHT; AND, FURTHER, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO EXTEND THE EXISTING ALTON-WEST LOOP TROLLEY ROUTE, OR START A NEW TROLLEY ROUTE TO INCLUDE BELLE ISLE, ENABLING RESIDENTS ACCESS TO SOUTH BEACH DURING THE WEST VENETIAN BASCULE BRIDGE CLOSURE. WHEREAS, on March 15, 2014, there was a localized bridge deck failure involving a Miami-Dade Transit passenger bus travelling eastbound across the West Venetian Bascule Bridge: and WHEREAS,the bus met the weight restrictions in place at the time of the incident; and WHEREAS, on Thursday, April 10, 2014, new signage was installed on the Venetian bridges lowering the weight limit from 15 tons to 11 tons on all of the bridges except the West Venetian Bascule Bridge, which has a 5-ton limit; and WHEREAS, replacement of the affected West Venetian Bascule Bridge section is required and will commence in mid-2015, resulting in full closure of the bridge for vehicular, pedestrian, and cycling traffic for nine (9) months; and WHEREAS, as a result of weight limitations, the Route A service provided by the County was modified to operate between Omni and Sunset Harbour, using smaller vehicles at longer headways and only during morning and afternoon peak hours; and WHEREAS, on April 30, 2014, the City Commission after a discussion on Belle Isle bus service in reference to current weight restrictions and upcoming West Venetian Bascule Bridge construction, directed the City Administration to urge Miami-Dade County to reinstate the original hours of operation of the Route A from 7:00 AM to midnight; and WHEREAS, additionally, the City Commission directed the Administration to extend the existing Alton-West Loop trolley route, or start a new trolley route to Include Belle Isle, enabling residents access to South Beach during the bridge closure. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby urge Miami-Dade County to reinstate the original hours of operation of the Route A bus service from 7:00 AM to midnight, and additionally direct the City Administration to extend the existing Alton-West Loop trolley route, or start a new trolley route to include Belle Isle, enabling residents access to South Beach during the West Venetian Bascule Bridge closure.
