Resolution 10766 RESOLUTION NO. 10766 WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach has earned the reputation of being one of the greatest tourist and convention resorts in the world, and WHEREAS, Miami Beach, with a permanent population of almost 65, 000 persons serves about a quarter of a million persons from all parts of the world on any given day, and WHEREAS, Miami Beach has the greatest concentration of ultra-modern, luxury hotels and apartment houses of any community of its size in the world, and WHEREAS, the volume of mail emanating from and destined for Miami Beach exceeds most cities many times larger than Miami Beach both geographi- cally and population-wise, and WHEREAS, Miami Beach, through public and private funds, spends many millions of dollars annually to promote the area and to attract visitors, and WHEREAS, Miami Beach is one of the few major cities of its size in the nation that cannot boast of its own postal service, and WHEREAS, the "Miami Beach" postmark on all mail emanating from this city is a major means of advertising this community, and WHEREAS, the operators of tourist and convention accommodations, local banking institutions and other businesses must rely upon fast mail service, and WHEREAS, mail service for both incoming and outgoing mail is materially delayed because Miami Beach does not have a main post office, and WHEREAS, it frequently takes as long as three days for delivery of a first class letter from its posting in a post office at Miami Beach to an address within a few minutes walking distance from the depository post office, and WHEREAS, business firms in Miami Beach must travel to Miami, four miles one way, to obtain bulk mailing permits, and WHEREAS, fast and efficient mail service is vital to the business com- munity of Miami Beach and the poor service over the years has been a source of embarrassment, frustration, chagrin and concern to the businessmen of the city and adeEerzent to the establishment of many new businesses, MELVIN J. RICHARD, ATTORNEY AT LAW. 940 LINCOLN ROAD, MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that these facts and circumstances be brought forcefully to the attention of the appropriate Federal authorities with the urgent request that the needs of this community be recognized by the establishment, with all speed, of a main post office in the Cityof Miami Beach, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded with dispatch to U. S. Senator Olin D. Johnston, Chairman of the Senate Com- mittee on Post Office and Civil Service, U. S. Congressman Tom Murray, Chairman of the House Committee on Post Office and Civil Service, U. S. Senators George A. Smathers and Spessard Holland, U. S. Congressman Dante B. Fascell, Hon. Claude Pepper, Democratic nominee for the U. S. Congress, Postmaster General J. Edward Day.
